V focuses topic of blog

For those of you just tuning in to my blog,  hello there.  My name is Vanessa.  I’m a multi-platform journalist who is experiencing all that the world in a recession has to offer.  Whee!   That means I’ve been doing random gigs to expand my understanding of a variety of professions.

Subsequently, this blog has morphed.  It used to be a forum in which I would take a position on an issue in the news and then rip it up and down (but not around my head like a helicopter) for fun.   Lately, it has been a bit unstructured.

Time to return to more responsible conversations.

Expect to see more posts about the journalism industry from a student’s perspective as I read everything I can get my eyes on before I start grad school classes this fall.   I’ll be studying how new platforms such as mobile phones and other interactive media are morphing story production, and what this means for a journalist who wants to produce video for the web.   I’m fascinated by the intersection of storytelling, interactive/multi/social media and business models.   Let me know if you find articles you think I should read.

The Wrap

Language

Hillary doesn’t speak another language and it doesn’t seem like she wants to learn how to communicate with other cultures. She basically said F becoming a bilingual country. Although she says she’s not for making English the “official” language, she would still make people learn English before becoming citizens.  So basically it would be the official language.   Pff.Obama says it’s important to learn English. Way to skirt the issue.  But he says “every students should be learning a second language.” I like that he’s open to talking to people who aren’t on America’s shit list.

The plagiarism debate

So, Obama borrowed words from a friend’s speech. Clinton camp cries plagiarism, Obama says no big deal–but what about this:

From what I can tell, and any Obama supporter I’ve spoken to, I hear one recurring factor–he’s a good speaker.

If this is one of his driving forces, if this is one of the things he seems to be campaigning on–speeches of hope and change and “yes we can”–then shouldn’t he be creating original speeches.

Clinton’s response–”It’s not change you can believe in, it’s change you can Xerox.” Ouch.  Says Obama is an eloquent speaker–but you need goals, not just say “let’s come together”.

Obama’s rebuttal–we’re on healthcare now. Um. Okay? Obama says his plan isn’t good…then says it’s the politics that have changed, not his plan.

The press center is freezing.

I wonder if the anyone will ask the questions offered by UT students via the Daily Texan’s website?

The staffers at UT’s paper, The Daily Texan, set up a camera, and students asked questions YouTube style.

Wonder if any of them will make the debate.

Here’s a link to them if you want to check it out — it’s  on the bottom of their page.

Border Fences

Will Clinton really listen to people who live on the border? She doesn’t seem like one who would go out and do that. I’m just not believing what she’s saying. What training program is going to motivate them to do a better job than the people who are there right now? How is a wall of people not a physical barrier?

I’m sick of hearing the words “comprehensive reform. ” TELL ME SPECIFICS.

Obama is pro-Dream Act. That one’s going to get him some votes.
